The goal of a direct mail piece is to craft a message that makes an impression and resonates with your prospects and customers. When this happens they are more likely to respond to your offer! First hurdle is obviously gaining their attention so you aren’t just creating another piece of trash but delivering your message.
Here are three things that we have found to be successful when creating a compelling direct mail message!
1. Make it Emotional
Emotion is the best way to connect with your audience and make it memorable. It’s important for your brand voice and marketing message to find ways to create the emotional appeal. Think of how non-profits tug at your heart-strings to get you to donate, it works! Every business has the capability of doing this and its important to find why what you do matters for your customers!
This is format agnostic and can apply to any marketing and brand message your deliver. This is one of our 7.5 Steps to Creating a Brand which we encourage you to read!
However, when it comes to doing this with a post card it is important to do it with imagery and not just words because of your limited space. When you are able to convey your message through powerful images, it creates a great way to draw people in. Make sure that you are not using language to disengage people. Stay away from clichés, boasting and arrogant messaging. No one wants to read that. Open, honest language is the best.
2. Testimonials
People generally trust the opinion of others more than that of a business. Adding testimonials from reputable companies make your products and/or services more credible. The testimonial provide an unbiased opinion, which provides peace of mind for potential prospects. People will take the time to read these if they are curious to what other people’s experiences have been.
3. Stories
Who doesn’t love a good story? At TheRiot Agency, we genuinely consider ourselves story tellers because that is what effective marketing and branding is all about. Marketing can’t make your products or services great, it can only paint the picture of how great they are. A cornerstone to an effective brand strategy is understanding your story and helping to make an emotional connection with your audience. Using tactics such as building curiosity to help them be rewarded for taking the next step.
